Idaho USA Launch for Willunga High School (South Australia)

The NearSys group launched mission NearSys-18A on 6 May 2018 carrying the Willunga High School (South Australia) BalloonSat. See the school's link at, Willunga High School.

The launch actually took place in Jordan Valley, OR, USA on account of the predicted winds aloft and mountainous nature of Idaho. The balloon reached 93,672 feet before bursting and the recovery was west of the Boise, ID airport. On this flight, amateur radio operators of the Voice of Idaho provided help with the launch and recovery of the 1200 gram balloon.

In addition to the Willunga High School payload, the balloon carried several experiments for NearSys and a BalloonSat for West Junior High in Nampa, ID. More data about the flight will be available shortly on the NearSys website.

Here are some of the images recorded during the flight.

Looking at the western end of the Treasure Valley. The lake at top center is Lake Lowell. Below that can be seen the Snake River.

This is the same region, but as seen in near infrared (NIR). NIR light penetrates the hazy blue atmosphere without scattering like visible light does. An additional benefit of NIR is that chlorophyll in plants is very reflective in NIR. Therefore, the white patches visible in this image are farms and crops.
